Still no plans for Dalgety Bay beach clear up as Sepa deadline looms
1 FebruaryAn announcement from the Ministry of Defence has provided no further details of plans to clear the Dalgety Bay shore of radioactive particles, as a SEPA deadline for plans to remove the dangerous items looms.
The MoD had been given until the end of January to prepare a draft plan to tackle the problem, but in a statement UK defence minister Andrew Robathan said they were continuing to work on a credible plan but gave no firm details. He also said the MoD was working in a voluntary capacity with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) and did not currently accept full liability for the problem.
SEPA had asked for a draft of the MoD's plan to clear the site by the end of January, with a final set of plans by the end of February – but full plans have yet to be provided although Sepa remains ‘optimistic’ that they will receive them.
Over the past few months more than 200 radioactive particles have been found and part of the shore was cordoned off in October for further investigation.
If no plans are received, Sepa say they will continue with the process to designate the land as contaminated by the end of March, a spokesman said.
