Gordon Brown calls for MoD to clean up Dalgety Bay
15 NovemberGordon Brown has called for urgent action to deal with the radioactive material on Dalgety Bay beach to make the sands safe for our children.
Mr Brown said he would meet with Defence Secretary Philip Hammond to discuss the matter.
The local MP and former prime minister said: "It was material from the armed forces that was deposited here and it is important that the fears of local residents be allayed, because they want to know that this area is safe for their children, safe for the boating and sailing that goes on here and also that the property values in this area are upheld."
The Sunday Herald reported last week that Dalgety Bay could become the first area in the UK to be permanently closed because it is riddled with radioactive material.
The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) could be forced to designate the site of the former airfield "radioactive contaminated land" if the Ministry of Defence does not take voluntary action to deal with the continuing problems.
If that happens, the paper reports, no amount of remedial action would see the designation lifted. Sepa has said it would only do this as a last resort.
