Dalgety Bay Round Table - February News

by Grant Reekie
The rapid expansion in membership of Dalgety Bay Round Table continues, with another two people joining us this month. In the last year we have had a 100% increase in membership, which puts us in a strong position for the years ahead.

Every year Dalgety Bay Round Table nominates a Charity of the Year, for whom most of our fundraising effort is aimed. This year we chose Headway Fife, a local charitable organisation which offers support to people who have sustained a brain injury, as well as their families. Dalgety Bay Round Table have committed to provide the full funding to allow Headway Fife to take a number of people, who have sustained brain injuries, to the Calvert Trust in Keswick Cumbria. This is a fabulous facility set in the lake district which caters exclusively for people with disabilities where there is the opportunity to be involved in a whole range of activities that they would otherwise never get the chance to do. This is done in a safe environment and by pushing these boundaries, with the support of the instructors, visitors feel more confident about trying new things at home.

This month we had a visit from the Chair of Headway Fife, Ellen Beveridge, who gave us a presentation on Headway Fife and what they do. Ellen gave a very moving account of her experiences within Headway Fife and showed us the importance of the Calvert Trust to the rehabilitation of people who have had a brain injury.

One of the main ways in which we will be raising funds is through running the Edinburgh Marathon in May. We have entered five of our members in the race and will be actively looking for sponsorship in the coming months. All funds will go directly to Headway Fife and these funds will be added to through a number of other fundraising ideas that are already being planned.

Our social programme also continues, this month we went to a beer tasting event at East End Park (Dunfermline FC) and we are hosting a Go-Karting endurance competition at Knockhill Race Track for Area 49 Round Table, the collection of Round Tables from Fife and Strathspey. Last year we won the competition so expectations are high!

We are also organising a Charter Dinner in October, to which we invite other Round Tables from across the country to come along and celebrate our 30 year (plus!) anniversary. We will be having an evening of good food and entertainment, which will take a lot of organisation. To give us an idea of how these events are run, this month three of our members are off to a Charter Dinner for Linlithgow Round Table on a reconnaissance mission; in the name of research they will endure an evening of being wined and dined!

More information can be found at www.dalgetybayroundtable.co.uk and our current list of social events is below. We meet for a business meeting on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at the Sailing Club and if any of this sounds up your street, please contact us through our web site above. It would be great to have you along.
