Bright Lights in Dalgety Bay Sky!

by Neil Dawson

Did anyone see the bright orange lights in the Dalgety Bay evening sky 03 July 2010? The bright continuous lights were travelling NNE at considerable speed, much faster than an aircraft and creating no noise!. First one went over at 23:30 and the second at approx 23:40. Visible for about 20 secs before fading into the distance. Probably debris or meteors entering the atmosphere ...but weird!! Would be interested if anyone else seen this. Also witnessed by my wife.

Hi Joanne, Glad someone else seen "the lights". It was quite surreal ! After the second one went over we had the video camera primed but alas no more were to appear. It was definately not aircraft as the light was circular and continuous as it passed overhead and into the distance. An aircraff would normally have flashing nav lights and could not travel at that sort of speed.

Hi All

On 03/07/10 the Relay For Life was taking place in the field at the the Sports Centre in Harbour Drive. After the Candle of Hope Ceremony at dusk people were sending up Flying Lanterns in memory of friends or relatives lost to cancer or in celebration of survivors.

That might explain lights seen over Dalgety bay, but not Motherwell!!

The lights will be chinese lanterns that slowly drift higher and higher and then burn out, there is no noise as its a small burning platform and they rise slowly usually.  It wont be anything other than that, these can be purchased anywhere and are very popular and lovely to watch.

Though a distraction to the coast guard as they resemble SOS flares and have been known to get caught and cut into the necks of live stock.
