A brief history of Dalgety Bay

The modern town of Dalgety Bay may only have a relatively brief history as a private enterprise new town, but the area where today's community stands has a much longer history.

1178 - First record of settlement at Dalgety

1567 - Fordell Castle built

1752 - St David's Harbour constructed

1830 - New St Bridget's church built

1858 - Donibristle House destroyed by fire

1890 - Dalgety Bay railway station opened

1962 - Modern town of Dalgety Bay founded as 'Enterprise Town'

1974 - Rotary Club of Inverkeithing and Dalgety Bay opened

1981 - New Dalgety Church built

Now it's your turn!

That's the briefest of brief summaries, and hardly covers the most important dates. But this is where you come in. There's lots of interest in local history and lots of local knowledge out there - so why not share it here? To add to the time-line, all you have to do is click on the edit button.

Or perhaps you'd like to start your own article about another aspect of Dalgety Bay history? You can do that, too. There must also be a wealth of wonderful photographs of old Dalgety Bay - maybe even some video of more recent events - and those are more than welcome here.

Post it all here, and let's see if we can really chronicle the history of Dalgety Bay in a way we can all share!

Marcus Stout says

I wonder what it would have felt like to be around at the settlement in 1178.

I live in Dalgety Bay now but the school which I went to - The High School of Dundee www.highschoolofdundee.co.uk/dates its origins back to the thirteenth century when the Abbot of Lindores was instructed to build a grammar school in the burgh of Dundee.

It is really of no consequence but it just goes to show that you can never be absolutely sure of what's going to happen in the future - possibly that is a good thing? - stay cool!

Memories, Nostalgia & History

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
